Tea Appreciation Society Challenging Teapot

via collections.vam.ac.uk The teapot was made on-stage during a performance by entertainer Johnny Vegas at the Ceramic Millennium conference in Amsterdam, 1999. It was thrown and assembled by Vegas in under 60 seconds as part of a challenge he set to potters Peter Stark...ey and Morgen Hall. The teapot was subsequently fired by Babs Haenen. The teapot is often regarded as the most challenging of ceramic forms. Made up of several functional parts; body, spout, handle, lid and internal strainer, the teapot can be complicated to perfect if it is to be practical as well as aesthetic. Teapots can be hand-made by throwing or modelling each component part and then joining the parts together, as is common in studio ceramic practice. It is also possible to use moulding techniques, often employed by industry. Usually a combination of these methods is used to produce a particular shape or design.

Tea Appreciation Society Tea and Tunes with Susie Clarke

At the Tea Appreciation Society we are all about tea and creativity... Tea enables us to reflect, be inspired and create... That’s why we appreciate the tea... Susie Clarke has been with us since the very early days, when we did our first little print run of organic tea...-shirts, Susie proudly sported her I LOVE TEA shirt on stage at summer festivals, gigs and on TV. Susie was heavily featured on MTV’s unsigned music show Get Seen Get Heard and a collection of demos on her limited edition Acoustic EP should whet the appetite whilst she continues to develop her material. Keep your eyes and ears open, this will be Susie Clarke's year. 2010 sees Susie embark on 'The Obscure Tour' where she is shamelessly hinting for invitations to tea. If you'd like Susie to come and play an intimate acoustic gig for you (UK only), just name the place and she'll be there: your bathroom, the science lab at college, the garden shed, your local cafe, Granny's attic. No place is too small or too strange, and all the fun and frolics along the way will be captured on film for the Obscure Tour documentary! If you'd like Susie to come and play for you, please send an email to multimusicpr@googlemail.com giving your name, town, suggested venue (i.e. My house, in the kitchen), contact email address and telephone number. Susie's looking forward to having a cuppa with you :) http://www.facebook.com/pages/Susie-Clarke/15107186139 See the full gallery on posterous

Tea Appreciation Society Space Station: Tea in Space

April 7, 2003     click on either of these images to view the complete 1.4 Mb Quicktime movie High Tea Credit: Don Pettit, ISS Expedition 6 Science Officer, NASA Explanation : It's a competition: surface tension vs. gravity. Surface tension holds droplets of water toge...ther. Gravity pulls them apart. On Earth, gravity usually wins. Only small droplets have enough surface tension per unit mass to remain intact. Onboard the International Space Station (ISS), however, surface tension rules . Weightless water can form big floating drops , large enough to quench your thirst and tough enough to handle using chopsticks. ISS science officer Don Pettit paused for afternoon tea--above--and showed us how it's done: "It's easy," says Pettit. "You just take your chopsticks, pick up a blob of tea, and pop it in your mouth. This is a practical demonstration of all the surface chemistry we learned about in college." Because fluid droplets onboard the space station are undisturbed by their own weight, they make marvelous research tools for investigations in basic fluid physics . The applications are many: Firefighters are interested because water mists can be used to extinguish flames . Weather forecasters are interested because rain clouds are made of water droplets. Automakers are interested because internal combustion engines burn tiny drops of fuel. And so on.... Plus, they're fun--and the entertainment value shouldn't be underestimated. One day, perhaps, luxury space hotels will offer their guests afternoon tea 300 miles above Earth . No cups or plates. Just chopsticks and droplets. Now that's high tea ! Editor's note: Don Pettit has filmed a series of afternoon tea demonstrations. The movies show how honey, peanut butter and tea behave in low gravity, and how astronauts clean up after snack time: Reel 1 (4.9 Mb), Reel 2 (1.4 Mb), Reel 3 (2.5 Mb), Reel 4 (2.6 Mb). via science.nasa.gov
